This photo of stone steps in an ancient building by Jonathan Ford pulls you into a spiral of mystery. Only good can come from exploring the depths, right? Right?!

Nothing could be waiting at the bottom to seize you by the leg and drag you into a dungeon lair. The lights would never spontaneously go out midway down. And no menacing figure would dare follow. Surely.

Just in case, you should probably bring a friend . . . and snacks . . . and maybe a candelabra to add to the mood. And just in case, you know, the lights do go out.
