Seeking the fantastical side of reality.

Author Bio

Julia V. Ashley is the author of several fantasy novels and short stories. Her work can be found in the upcoming anthologies A Bit of Luck, and Murderbugs: Unhelpful Encyclopedia Vol. 2. Her debut short story “Two Tickets to Tomorrow” came out in the 2022 anthology 4th And Starlight.

As an architect, Julia finds inspiration by delving into the crumbling buildings of the Gothic South. Seeking to find the beauty in broken things, people, and places which she incorporates into her contemporary fantasies. She lives beside the Old Natchez Trace with her husband and a rescue dog of nebulous origins.

Silver haired Julia sorts colored index cards outlining scenes in a novel.

My Writing Process

“It’s a messy affair, but occasionally all the cards line up.” ~ Julia Ashley

“I brainstorm. I plot. I write. I hit a snag and circle back. Over and over until I reach the end. The goal is to keep moving and don’t look back—that’s what edits are for.

Then I send it to my incredible crit partners and take a breath.

During edits, I go into full over-analysis mode. A straight read-through, documenting major issues, followed by a torturous analysis of potential fixes, leads to a major rewrite followed by a line edit.

The fewer passes, the less likely I am to wring the life from the story.”
